Welcome to the official page of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea to Portugal.

Portugal, located in the westernmost point of the Eurasian Continent “where the land ends and the sea begins”, is a country of grand historic feats, having taken the lead in the era of the Great Navigations during the 15th and 16th centuries. As a matter of fact, a Portuguese merchant was the first Westerner to set foot on Korean territory in 1577. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1961, Portugal and Korea have kept close relations in all the areas of politics, diplomacy, economy, culture, etc.

Portugal is known as the country of the three Fs: Fado (Portuguese traditional ballad meaning fate), Football, and Fátima (one of the catholic sanctuaries). For about 10 years, after joining the European Union in 1986, Portugal registered one of the highest economic growth rates in Europe and, nowadays, keeps its effort to become a primary production platform in Europe. Meanwhile, the headquarters of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP, with a combined population of 220 million people in its 8 countries: Portugal, Brazil, East-Timor, Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, São Tomé and Principe and Guinea-Bissau) is also located in Lisbon. Portugal accordingly maintains very close relations with these countries.

In the field of economy, Korea and Portugal have signed as many agreements as the ones on trade; economic, industrial and technological cooperation; mutual investment promotion and protection; avoidance of double taxation, etc. A continued increase of trade and economic cooperation between the two countries is expected in future, as such Korean electronic and electric goods and cars well liked among the Portuguese. In the cultural area, since the signing of the cultural agreement in 1990, there have been a variety of cultural exchanges between Portugal and Korea, including mutual participation in international film festivals hosted both in Korea and Portugal. Through the varied concerts, shows and exhibitions initiated by Korean artists, Korea is becoming more and more known in Portugal. Among others, Taekwondo that is a major Olympic sports event originated from Korean traditional martial art, was introduced in Portugal in 1974, and particularly the organisation in Seoul of the 2002 Football World Cup, are making a good impression of Korea on the Portuguese people.

Bem-vindo à página oficial da Embaixada da República da Coreia em Portugal.

Portugal, situado no ponto mais ocidental do Continente Euro-asiático “onde a terra se acaba e o mar começa”, é um país com grandes marcos na história, tendo assumido a liderança durante a época das Grandes Navegações dos séculos XV e XVI. Um mercador português foi inclusivamente o primeiro ocidental a pisar solo coreano em 1577. Desde o estabelecimento de relações diplomáticas em 1961, Portugal e a Coreia têm mantido um estreito relacionamento nas áreas da política, diplomacia, economia, cultura, etc.

Portugal é conhecido pelo país dos três F’s: Fado, Futebol e Fátima, um dos santuários católicos. Durante cerca de 10 anos, após a sua adesão à União Europeia em 1986, Portugal registou uma das mais altas taxas de crescimento económico da Europa e, hoje em dia, continua a esforçar-se para se transformar numa grande plataforma de produção dentro da Europa. A sede da Comunidade dos Países de Língua Portuguesa (CPLP, com uma população total de 220 milhões de habitantes nos 8 países: Portugal, Brasil, Timor-leste, Angola, Moçambique, Cabo Verde, São Tomé e Príncipe e Guiné-Bissau) situa-se em Lisboa. Portugal mantém um relacionamento muito próximo com estes países.

Na área da economia, a Coreia e Portugal assinaram acordos de comércio, de cooperação económica, industrial e tecnológica, de promoção e protecção mútua de investimentos, de prevenção da dupla tributação, etc. Sendo os produtos electrónicos e eléctricos bem como os automóveis coreanos muito apreciados em Portugal, prevê-se um aumento contínuo da cooperação económica entre os dois países, no futuro próximo. Na área da cultura, desde a assinatura do acordo cultural em 1990, existem vários tipos de intercâmbios culturais entre Portugal e a Coreia, incluindo a participação recíproca em festivais internacionais de cinema realizados tanto na Coreia como em Portugal. Através da realização de vários concertos, espectáculos e exposições de artistas coreanos, a Coreia é cada vez mais conhecida em Portugal. O Taekwondo, modalidade olímpica de relevo com origem na arte marcial coreana, foi introduzido em Portugal em 1974, e, particularmente a organização do Campeonato do Mundo de Futebol de 2002 em Seul, entre outros, estão a causar boa impressão da Coreia junto do povo português.
